ASB GlassFloor connects computer technology with physical world at Audi Cup 2019

Next to FC Bayern, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahçe Istanbul, the Bavarian company ASB GlassFloor was another player at the Audi Cup 2019. Next to an animated player’s tunnel, the certified high-tech sports floor “ASB LumiFlex” was the center of attention and offered visitors the possibility of an entirely new experience. On an area of 84 sqm, the idea of a computer game was coupled with physical movement. For the first time ever, two totally different worlds merged into one and especially kids were hence playfully animated to move.

The player’s task was to make it across the 14-meter long course. They had to jump onto animated moving cars without missing them or being hit by the animated lightning bolts crossing their path. A little beacon that was attached to the player’s collars constantly signaled their position and transferred this input to the floor. The company Kinexon was responsible for the tracking system.
This game within the Audi Cup was however only the harbinger for the actual field of application of ASB’s “LumiFlex”. The Handball Bundesliga certified and FIBA accredited sports floor made of glass, equipped with millions of LEDs and working just like a huge monitor, offers entirely new possibilities of presentation, especially for indoor sports.

Whoever wants to see the floor in action for themselves is more than welcome to come and see the Volleyball Supercup at the TUI Arena in Hanover on 20th October. For the first time ever, an official game of an Olympic sport will be held on an interactive floor. This symbiosis between sports and technology gives way to new dimensions that have the potential of permanently changing the world of sports.

ASB LumiFlex

The certified sports floor is FIBA accredited, licensed for Handball Bundesliga and meets the requirements of the European norm EN 14904:2006 for area-elastic sports floors. Due to its characteristics, e.g. the burned in ceramic dots on the glass surface, it features ideal conditions for the athletes’ health. The premium version features 25’600 RGB LEDs incorporated in one square meter of flooring. These ensure that all lines and effects are nicely visible, even under daylight. Since the joint-friendly surface is water repellent and cannot be damaged through pointy or hard objects, the ASB LumiFlex is also perfectly suitable for concerts or other in- or outdoor events. It is extremely sturdy and easy to clean. As a full LED Video floor, it offers entirely new possibilities for application. Live tracking opens up new training options. Any logo, advertisement or film can be displayed via plug & play technology, which offers new advertising formats for companies and clubs. All of this and then some, makes ASB LumiFlex one of the most exciting innovations in sports.
